Huntsville's Seven Hills

The seven hills in Huntsville are as follows:

1) Capitol Hill (17th Street and University Avenue). This site was a finalist in the list of proposed sites for the State Capitol. Obviously, Austin won;

2) Cotton Gin Hill (7th Street and University Avenue). This was the site of an old cotton gin;

3) Smith Hill (Smith Hill Road and Roosevelt Street)

4) Depot Hill (15th Street and University Avenue). This was the site of an old train depot;

5) Peckerwood Hill (Sycamore Street and Bearkat Boulevard). This is the site of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate cemetery;

6) Gospel Hill (Gospel Road); and

7) Knowledge Hill (21st Street and Avenue. O). When SHSU was Sam Houston Teachers College, most of the professors lived in this area. It was, therefore, referred to as, “Knowledge Hill.”
